A mythical and unavoidable place for history lovers. South Africa's largest city is also the emblematic site of the struggle against Apartheid. The most famous district is Soweto. 

We recommend a guided tour to discover the history of this district as it should be: the former house of Nelson Mandela (now a museum), the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Museum... 

But Johannesburg also presents a completely different face. It is home to art galleries, trendy restaurants and theatres. The Braamfontein and Maboneng districts are worth a visit !

This is the 3rd largest canyon in the world (that's all!). It is undoubtedly one of the most majestic sites in South Africa. It is located about 1 hour drive from the Kruger National Park, and will be an ideal stopover! 

The scenery is breathtaking and hikers will have a great time. The most famous sights of this beautiful canyon are Bourke's Luck Potholes (giant pots dug into the limestone by the sand and pebbles carried by the water), the Three Rondavels (cliffs in the shape of huts), as well as beautiful waterfalls such as Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls.

You will also be able to do all sorts of activities, from canyoning (make sure you are insured with the sport+ option), horse riding and... for thrill seekers, zip line (you bring back pictures for the less courageous among us?) !

If there's one thing you obviously have to do in South Africa, it's go on safari, looking for the "big five", as they're known. These are the 5 emblematic animals of South Africa: lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo. You will be able to admire many other animals, including giraffes, reptiles and several species of birds.

This park of about 2.2 million hectares is the largest nature reserve in Africa, but also one of the oldest and most extensive parks in the world. So it won't come as a surprise if I tell you that this is the one most visited by tourists! And he's worth it...

It is possible to discover this magnificent reserve at the wheel of your own vehicle, or accompanied by a ranger. We recommend this last option, which will not only allow you to get off the beaten track, but also to take advantage of the expert eye of the rangers and make this unique experience an unforgettable memory. 

We have a member of our community who is very involved in the defence of the animals of the Kruger, especially elephants, and we would like to introduce her to you! This immense park is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Drakensberg ("Dragon Mountain" in Afrikaans... quite a program) is a mountain range, whose highest point, the Thabana Ntlenyana, dominates at 3482 meters.

Don't panic if you are a beginner hiker, there are routes for all levels. You will be able to enjoy sensational panoramas, caves, waterfalls, cliffs, whatever your climbing experience. You can even swim in waterfalls and natural pools. One of the highlights of the Drakensberg is the Amphitheatre: it is an incredible circus, located at 2930 metres above sea level.

There are also the Tugela Falls which are among the highest falls in the world.

Cape Town is certainly a must-see destination during a stay in South Africa. This port city offers many beautiful discoveries! Start by taking the cable car up to the famous Table Mountain, the flat mountain that dominates the city (Or go on foot, following one of the trails that lead to it! From 3 to 10 kilometers of walking). This will give you a magnificent view of the Cape. 

A short historical visit to Robben Island will also be a must. That's where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Don't miss the Cape Peninsula and the famous Cape of Good Hope, located at the tip of the peninsula, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

On the city side, the Malaysian Bo-Kaap district will brighten up your stay and your souvenir photos! The houses are painted in all colours.

The Americans have their Route 66... and the Africans have their Route 62! Get ready to discover a whole bunch of sublime landscapes! You can choose to venture out along the seaside or, on the contrary, go inland to discover incredible panoramas.

The Garden Route ends in Port Elizabeth. This city, often "forgotten" by tourists, is nevertheless worth a stop!

The best place for whale watching is the seaside town of Hermanus. It is located 1h30 drive from Cape Town and is one of the recommended stops on the Route des Jardins.

The ideal time to observe these impressive mammals is from June to early November, when the whales are in full migration. (If you go there outside of this time, you may still see sea lions and seals). 

What's quite incredible is that you can observe them from the coast! Of course, you'll enjoy it more if you go on a cruise, but if you get seasick, you might not miss anything from the shore!

This whale-watching site is world-renowned.

30 minutes from Hermanus is the village of Gansbaai. 

From here you can set out to meet the white sharks, which are numerous off the coast of South Africa, especially in this region. 

You will have the opportunity to dive with the sharks (under cover, in a cage) or, if you are not a fan of the idea of being just a few centimetres away from these big fish with sharp teeth, you can also observe them from the deck of the boat, which will already give you your share of thrills.

Located about 1 hour drive from Cape Town, this city is the symbol of a region that is (re)known worldwide for its wines. It is the French, who came to settle in the region with vines (mainly Chardonnay), who are at the origin.

South African wines are well known, and if you're a wine lover, you'll be able to enjoy vineyard tours and wine tastings. In addition, the landscapes of the region are worth the detour and you can take advantage of it to go for a walk.

This park, located on the coast of Santa Lucia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Between beaches, mangroves, marshes, savannahs, it offers a very diversified ecosystem and must be seen! It is the home of many hippos, crocodiles, all kinds of birds, turtles... 

Cruises are organized on the estuary of Santa Lucia and will allow you to enjoy all the ecosystem that the region has to offer.

The North, with a more historic soul. We could speak of deep Thailand, with its cities of another time, its sumptuous temples, its mountains, land of traditional peoples.

Bangkok, the capital city, and its surroundings, just as grandiose. 

The South and its paradisiacal islands, its dream beaches, some of which have even been the setting for films or television programmes.

It is the 2nd largest city in the country, after Bangkok. Also considered the capital of the north, this city is very lively. 

The old town is home to the majority of the city's attractions and temples. It is surrounded by a moat and a surrounding wall. 

You will have access to it through one of the four doors, located at the four cardinal points. In addition to the temples, you can discover many bars and markets.

Doi Suthep National Park is located just outside the city. Start climbing the 300 steps to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. The statues of this temple are particularly superb !

If you want to spend time with elephants, do so in a sanctuary that takes in abused or abandoned elephants. 

You will be able to help the healers, but under no circumstances will you be able to ride on the backs of these emblematic animals.  

You can, for example, go to the Elephant Nature Park or the Happy Elephant Home.

It is the first capital of Siam. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and rightly so! 

This historic park, a true open-air archaeological site, is splendid, especially the historic heart. It is one of the most impressive sites in Thailand. It is quite extensive and spread over several areas.

The core area is home to the largest and best preserved temples (such as Wat Mahathat), statues and ponds. In the northern sector thrones the Wat Si Chum temple and its impressive 15-metre high Buddha. 

The western zone is a little less interesting, except for Wat Saphan Hin and his standing Buddha.

If you like hiking, Northern Thailand will offer you an incredible experience. Several tours are proposed, of different levels. You will be able to meet traditional peoples and their villages. (A little taste of "Rendezvous in Uncharted Waters"?)

Get ready for a whole different atmosphere than in the north! 

Here, life is in full swing. You will be immersed in the heart of a lively city, where modernity and traditions blend.

The first must-see in Bangkok is the Royal Palace and its emerald Buddha. Just next to the palace is the Wat Pho, a temple known for its huge statue of Buddha lying down (45 meters long!). Wat Arun is also worth the detour, and remains in the same neighborhood.

If you're not afraid of crowds, take the time to discover the China Town area. The hustle and bustle will make your head spin, but you will find a thousand and one stalls, and you must also visit one of the city's floating markets. There are several in Bangkok and the experience is worthwhile.

This charming city is located 130 km from Bangkok. It is located on the banks of the Kwai River, famous for the bridge over it. Yet it is the symbol of the city's terrible past during the Second World War.

In addition to visiting the bridge, you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and swim in the beautiful Erawan waterfalls or take a walk in the Sai Yok National Park. Looking for that little extra unique experience ?

Then book a night in one of the floating hotels in the city !

Ayutthaya is also an ancient capital of the kingdom of Siam and one of the must-see sites in Thailand. Easily accessible from Bangkok (75km away), it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (And yes, one more!) 

The splendour of the temples and monasteries that it shelters plunges us back into the grandeur of this kingdom of a thousand beauties. The main temples are spread over different sites, sometimes remote. It is therefore advisable to go from one to the other by bike or... to take advantage of it to experience the tuk tuk ! (Because you don't leave without having experienced it, we agree!).

One of the best known temples of the site is Wat Mahathat, where we find the head of Buddha in stone, imprisoned in the roots of a tree.

If you want to travel around Ayutthaya, make a detour to Lopburi, which is about an hour's drive away. 

This town has become the territory of many macaques, which are its main attraction. 

Be careful, then, because the monkeys are at home here! The risk of bites is very real, we must not forget that these are wild animals.

It is the largest island in the country. It welcomes mass tourism and allows many activities, diving, climbing, quad biking...

Bars, shops and street kitchens, hotels, nightclubs can be counted in spades.

Some corners are a little quieter and worth the detour, such as Nai Harn Bay and Cape Panwa.

This province is famous for its karstic formations: cliffs, caves... It is also criss-crossed by heavenly beaches and bordered by numerous islands which are just as many! A dream destination. 

Ao Nang is the main seaside resort and has the advantage of being close to the centre. You will find many beaches, each one prettier than the next, and nature lovers will be delighted too.

The province abounds in a rich fauna and flora: national parks (terrestrial and marine), natural sites, hiking.

It should be noted that the famous Maya Bay, beach of the Koh Phi Phi archipelago, has been closed to visitors since June 2018. It is one of the most famous beaches, due to the shooting of the movies "The Beach" (Léoooo are you there??) and "James Bond".

Too many tourists have ended up destroying the coral reefs and the ecosystem of the place. It seems that today the situation is improving but Maya Bay remains closed to visitors to allow the coral reefs to regenerate completely. The closure will apply until at least 2021 and it has already been announced that access to boats and tourists will be significantly more limited when it reopens.

For our part, we applaud the fact that some natural sites are beginning to be closed in order to ensure their survival. (We told you in a previous article about the recent ban on climbing Uluru's rocky dome in Australia).

And yes! It is indeed this island that gave its name to the famous reality show! 

Indeed, the very first edition was shot there in 2001.

There are so many magical islands in Thailand that it is difficult to make a choice. Koh Lanta is bordered by beautiful sandy beaches.

Thailand is definitely one of the countries to see once in a lifetime (or more if the opportunity arises). It has many faces, which makes it breathtaking.

We told you not long ago, Australia is the big winner among the favourite destinations of French globetrotters. And no wonder! Australia is vast and presents such a variety of landscapes (all more beautiful than the others) that it is difficult to make a selection of destinations not to be missed under any circumstances. It's (almost) as if we were trying to make a top 10 list of things to see in France... Not easy, isn't it? But as nothing can stop us, we've compiled a few must-see places, both for the globetrotter in the cities and the globetrotter in the fields.

2) The must-sees on the city side - the top 3

If there is only one city to visit in Australia, it is Sydney and one of its most famous monuments is undoubtedly the Opera House. 

Its building is famous for its white granite tile roofs that represent a sailboat or a shell, depending on one's interpretation. It is located in Sydney Harbour, home to the equally prestigious Harbor Bridge.

This bridge, which stretches over one kilometre, is the widest in the world (about 50 metres). You feel like an adventurer? (What a question...) In that case, don't hesitate and go for the ascent of this monument, to enjoy some thrills, but also a magnificent view once you reach the top. Equipped with a wetsuit, carabiners and a harness, you will be on your way for a 3h30 ascent. (After passing a breathalyzer test beforehand...) If you want to go even higher, the Sydney Tower will give you a great view of the city. Perched 305 meters high, you'll have a 360-degree view.
Sydney is lined with many beaches. You feel like trying your hand at surfing? It's the perfect place, meeting place for all surfers! The best known is Bondi Beach, but if you want to take a little ferry ride, go to Manly Beach. On the nature side, we recommend the Royal National Park, located south of the city. This national park is known for its eight-shaped natural pools and is well worth a visit !

Strolling the streets... that's what we like to do in Melbourne.

The Queen Victoria Market is an event not to be missed. This market, born in 1878, is a real attraction. Every Wednesday evening, it turns into a festival of food trucks and concerts of all styles. (So, shall we dance?) The city is known and reputed for its street art which is widely spread there. Impossible not to know this immense monolith located in the heart of the Red Centre. Also known as Ayers Rock, it is located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which belongs to the Anangu Aborigines and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Yes, yes, just that!)

Uluru was made popular by the Australian rock band Midnight Oil and their hit song "Dead Heart".

Uluru and the rock domes of Kata Tjuta, located west of the monolith, are considered sacred places by these ancestral peoples, who have faced a rush of tourists to their site, and, unfortunately, the lack of respect that sometimes comes with it. Fortunately since the end of October 2019, this site is now inaccessible to climbers.

But have no fear, modern-day globetrotter, this will not prevent you from admiring this magnificent desert region.

If you like sunsets, you will be dazzled by the glowing colours of the sacred rock when the sun falls on the horizon. (Romantic alert!)

This gigantic coral system is not only classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but is also one of the seven natural wonders of the world. (When you were told that Australia is a must-see destination...) You might as well say that it would be inconceivable not to go there.

The Great Barrier Reef extends over approximately 2,300 kilometres, covering an area of 348,000 km² and is visible from space. You certainly know one of his reliefs, heart-shaped, very often photographed. This ecosystem is one of the richest and most varied, but above all it is extremely important for the conservation of biodiversity. That's why he's been the focus of media attention. Many scientists are concerned about his "state of health" as a result of global warming and pollution.

There are an incredible number of corals, fish, crustaceans, algae, molluscs, but also turtles, dolphins and whales. A diversity and colours to make you dream !

This archipelago of 74 islands is located on the Great Barrier Reef. Paradise atmosphere guaranteed! These islands are the ideal starting point to visit the Great Barrier Reef. 

That's where you'll find the unmissable Whitehaven Beach. This beach of whiter than white sand will plunge you into the heart of a postcard and is considered one of the most beautiful in Australia.

Some islands of the archipelago are composed of natural parks and therefore protected. Enough to delight lovers of hiking and camping.

Others have chosen to offer a luxurious atmosphere, with top-of-the-range hotels and the service that goes with it. Two different atmospheres, but always in a turquoise environment that is ideal for sailing or catamaran* trips, diving and other underwater pleasures!

Australia's third largest island is a natural gem. The fauna and flora are incredible! It has long been preserved from external effects thanks to its geographical location (somewhat isolated from the continent) and its cliffs.

Vertiginous stairs, precipices to cross, waterfalls to cross, cliffs, canyoning*... The landscapes and activities are varied. Go to Echo Point to enjoy a breathtaking view. Here you can admire the Three Sisters, an impressive rock formation.

As its name suggests, it is a 243-kilometre-long road that winds its way along the southeast coast of Australia along the state of Victoria. It is located about 100 km from Melbourne, a nice combination so if you decide to visit this city.

There are many ways to travel the Great Ocean Road. You can drive around in your own vehicle, allowing you to stop wherever you want and discover the sites of your choice. The only concern is that it is more complicated to enjoy this tour while you are driving, so choosing an organized tour allows you to enjoy the view, but you are constrained to the sites chosen by the tour operator.

Anyway, prepare yourself (once again!) to admire breathtaking landscapes : breathtaking ocean views, beaches, but also a wilder aspect with tropical forests. You'll get to see koalas and kangaroos. (After all, that's why we come to Australia, isn't it?)

Don't miss the Twelves Apostles, those rocks sculpted by the sea.

The capital of Bolivia, located at some 3,800 metres above sea level, is the highest capital in the world. It is located in the Altiplano, one of the highest populated regions in the world, in the heart of the Andes Cordillera, where traditions are still very much alive. You will find many craft markets, but the one not to be missed is the famous "Witches' Market"! The stalls are full of strange objects and plants, full of superstitions and traditions, including fetuses of mummified llamas (yes, I confess...)! In the beliefs of the indigenous peoples, these foetuses would bring blessings to a new home if buried underneath... The beautifully preserved and colourful Jaén pedestrian street, along which you will have the opportunity to visit several museums. 

Plaza Murillo, in the heart of the city, is lined with numerous statues and colonial buildings.

The Mirador Kili Kili (you'll find all the possible spellings for this Mirador ! Killi Killi, K'illi K'illi, in short, this is the one!) will give you a breathtaking view of La Paz.

The Valley of the Moon is located about ten kilometres from the centre. She's a must see! The landscapes created by erosion are magical.

For the most reckless, there is of course the famous Death Road! The road of the Yungas (of its real name) was originally built to connect La Paz with the village of Coroico. Many fatal accidents occurred there, partly because the road was too narrow for two vehicles to pass each other. For example, one of the vehicles may have tipped over when reversing, especially when the terrain had been made slippery by rain....

Today it is reserved for cyclists, who, if they remain careful, do not risk their lives!

The ruins of Tiwanaku, a true archaeological site, are also worth a visit. They are located about 70 kilometres from La Paz.

Nicknamed "the white city", Sucre is a must in Bolivia. It is even the second capital of Bolivia, the "constitutional" capital. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of those cities where people love to stroll and admire the architecture. The mountainous environment makes it even more splendid. Everything seems harmonious and the city offers many opportunities for discovery. One of the best known monuments is La Casa de la Libertad, the historic place where Bolivia's declaration of independence was signed. 

La Recoleta, located on the heights of Sucre, offers an incredible view of the city.


Once back down, we take a break at the Mercado Central to taste a good fresh fruit juice, the Bolivar Park is also very nice, as well as... the cemetery of the city! And yes! The cemetery atmosphere in South America is not the same as here. The culture and beliefs around death are very different.

In any case, one thing is sure, you don't hesitate to wander through the white city and get lost in its alleys!

For hikers, treks to the Maragua crater are offered starting from Sucre.

This mining town, located at about 4,000 meters above sea level (so be careful if you are prone to altitude sickness and think about insuring yourself for destinations above 3,000 meters), was developed at the foot of the Cerro Rico mountain, which is its guardian. The Spaniards founded it, after discovering important silver mines, and forced the local population to work there.

The mines are still in operation today, and it is possible to visit them. The working conditions of the miners are far from easy, and during the visits it is possible to offer gifts to the workers, as well as offerings to the god of the mine, El Tio. Let's be honest, we're not that keen on the "go see the miners at work" aspect... So let's be careful how we approach the visit.

In addition, the architecture of the city is splendid and presents several colonial buildings. The Casa de la Moneda is a must in Potosí. That's where the silver from the city's mines was minted.

Potosí is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural and historical value.

It's nice to walk around this city. Modern in some aspects, but still steeped in history, as evidenced by the Metropolitan Cathedral in Piazza del 24 Septiembre, the Basilica San Lorenzo and several museums.

120 kilometres from Santa Cruz, is the Fort of Samaipata, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This archaeological site was very important in pre-Columbian times. It was probably an Incan spiritual place. 

From Samaipata, you will be able to discover the Amboró National Park. This park is a huge nature reserve, which will delight nature lovers with its flora and fauna.

The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos, located in the Department of Santa Cruz, are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Yes, once again, there are only treasures in Bolivia).

And finally, for the fans of Che (Guevara), an excursion will allow you to visit mythical places of its history.

We stay high with Uyuni, at 3,670 meters above sea level. One of the emblematic places of the region is without a doubt the Salar d'Uyuni, an immense salt desert which extends over approximately 11,000 km²!

It would have formed following the disappearance of a prehistoric lake. This Bolivian wonder is breathtaking. The desert is home to several villages and is dotted with "lakes" (called Los Ojos de Agua), as well as islands, such as the island of Incahuasi, known for its giant cacti. The latter offers a breathtaking view of the Tunupa volcano and the salar.

It is possible to go up this volcano, at least part of it, to reach a viewpoint located at about 4,700 metres above sea level. (Basically, don't plan to make this climb on the run...)

This desert region is another small splendour of Bolivia! 

Located in the south of the country, on the border with Chile, it offers many incredible landscapes. The weather conditions are harsh, making it mainly uninhabited. (Except for herds of llamas and flamingos of several species).

Among the curiosities not to be missed are the geysers, which can reach 200 degrees, as well as lagoons with multicoloured reflections created by the presence of algae and minerals: the Laguna Colorada, the Laguna Verde (visible from space!) and the Laguna Blanca.

You can also discover the deserts of Siloli (and its famous "stone tree") and Dalí (named after its peculiar colours).

Tupiza is located near the border with Argentina and offers landscapes worthy of the Far West! 

Glowing canyons, huge cacti, mountains... 

It's almost like the United States! The region can be explored in many ways, on horseback, mountain bike, or simply on foot.

The city can be the starting point to the South Lipez and the Salar de Uyuni. (Most of the time, tourists do this route in the opposite direction, so it allows you to be a little calmer by doing it this way).

This must-see in Bolivia is dotted with numerous islands, some of which are inhabited by traditional peoples. 

Among the best known are the Isla de la Luna and the Isla del Sol, which is said to be the cradle of Inca civilization !

This magnificent park is located in the region of La Paz, in the heart of the Amazonian forest (which actually covers a huge part of the Bolivian territory!). Madidi is considered the best preserved park in the Amazon. The access is by boat from Rurrenabaque.

The diversity of flora and fauna is breathtaking. It is one of the most important biospheres on the planet. The park is home to many indigenous communities and is an extraordinary experience in the middle of the Amazon jungle !

The park, in the heart of the Andes Cordillera, has the big advantage of not being invaded by tourists. 

The landscapes are breathtaking, so much they still seem wild. The village of Sajama is almost at the foot of the volcano of the same name. The latter is the highest peak in the country and reaches an altitude of 6,548 metres.

Might as well tell you that the view from its snowy peaks is magnificent. Two other volcanoes tower over the park: Parinacota volcano (6,348 metres) and Pomerape volcano (6,282 metres). 

Hikers will be able to have a good time, as it is possible to climb it, but with caution, given the altitude! If you are planning this kind of trekking, make sure you know what you are doing, and do it at the end of your stay, when your body has already acclimatized and is well on its way!
