September delivers what travellers rarely find at the same time: proper summer sunshine, noticeably smaller crowds and prices that reflect the end of high season. Five destinations capture this sweet spot perfectly: Tuscany for its harvest season, Greece for its still-warm beaches, Japan for its first autumn coolness, South Africa for its safaris and Yellowstone for its geothermal landscapes bathed in autumn light.

Tuscany, Italy: Harvest Season, Wine and Autumn Light

September is grape harvest season in the Chianti. Two events define the region’s calendar: the Expo del Chianti Classico in Greve in Chianti (mid-September), bringing together wine tastings, olive oil and local cheeses, and the Vino al Vino festival in Panzano (third week of September). Temperatures range between 15 and 25°C, and the late-season light turns every hillside into a painting.

Florence and Siena can be explored without the summer bottlenecks. The SR 222, known as the Chiantigiana, winds between the two cities through Chianti’s vineyards and offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region.

Greece: 27°C Sea and Uncrowded Beaches

In September, the Cyclades offer the most pleasant conditions of the year: air temperatures between 25 and 28°C, sea temperatures around 27°C and near-daily sunshine. The beaches of Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos are noticeably quieter than in July and August, and accommodation prices adjust accordingly.

Athens benefits from the same lull: the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora can be visited without enduring summer’s peak heat. On Crete, the Samaria Gorge remains open until mid-October, weather permitting.

Japan: The Heat Eases, Autumn Begins

September marks the transition from Japan’s humid summer heat to the first pleasant days of autumn. In Kyoto, temperatures settle around 25°C, far more comfortable than August. Tokyo can be explored in relative calm: the large November crowds, which flock in for the autumn foliage peak, have not yet arrived.

In the mountain regions, Nikko and Hakone begin to take on golden hues from late September. It is the ideal time to combine city and nature without needing to book six months in advance.

South Africa: Safaris and the Southern Spring

In September, South Africa is emerging from its austral winter. In Kruger National Park, animals congregate around the still-shrinking waterholes, making sightings far easier: this is one of the best periods of the year to spot the Big Five. Temperatures range from 14°C in the morning to 30°C in the afternoon, with barely 14 mm of rainfall across the entire month.

In Cape Town, the Kirstenbosch botanical gardens are in full bloom. Table Mountain can be hiked in excellent conditions before the summer winds set in, and the Stellenbosch wine route is easily accessible from the city in half a day.

Yellowstone National Park: Elk in Rut, Crowds Gone

More than half of Yellowstone’s annual visitors arrive between June and August. From September, the park regains a welcome serenity and offers one of its most remarkable sights: the elk rut. Their bugling calls echo at dawn across meadows and forests, a sound experience that summer’s crowds make it impossible to fully appreciate.

Mornings are cool (2 to 7°C) but afternoons remain pleasant (17 to 22°C), so pack layers. Geysers, coloured thermal pools and volcanic landscapes are best appreciated in the particularly flattering autumn light.

FAQ

What is the best beach destination in September?

The Greek Cyclades come out on top: air temperatures between 25 and 28°C, sea at 27°C and beaches far less crowded than in the height of summer. Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos offer the best swimming conditions in Europe in September.

Where should I go on safari in September?

South Africa, and Kruger National Park in particular, is an excellent choice. The dry season draws wildlife to the waterholes, Big Five sightings are among the best of the year, and afternoon temperatures reach 30°C.

Can you see autumn foliage in Japan in September?

Not yet in the major cities: the colour peak in Kyoto and Tokyo falls in November. However, the northern mountain ranges, such as Nikko and Hakone, begin to turn red and gold from late September.

Do travel prices really fall in September?

Generally, yes. The end of the school summer holidays reduces demand for flights and accommodation, and prices are often lower than in July and August, particularly for Mediterranean destinations.

Do I need travel insurance for a September trip?

Whatever your destination, medical and repatriation cover protects against costs that can reach very high sums, particularly in the United States or Japan. Yupwego offers online subscription, available right up until you close your suitcase.
