In Dubai, all healthcare available to visitors is provided by private facilities and billed at full market rates. A single consultation can exceed 100 euros; a hospital stay can run into thousands. There is no social security agreement between France and the UAE: without travel insurance, you face those costs entirely on your own.

Is travel insurance required for Dubai?

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for entry into Dubai. It is, however, strongly recommended: there is no social security agreement between France and the UAE, and private facilities will invariably ask for a payment guarantee before treating you.

Why take out travel insurance for the UAE?

  • High medical costs: In Dubai, all healthcare available to tourists is provided by private clinics, with no reimbursement from the French social security system. A hospital stay can quickly run to several thousand euros.
  • Medical repatriation: In the event of a serious emergency, organising a medicalised flight back to France from Dubai is extremely expensive. Your travel insurance covers this in full.
  • Cancellation and pre-departure disruption: An unexpected event (illness, accident, strike) can force you to cancel a trip you have already paid for. Cancellation cover reimburses your costs for the reasons set out in your policy.
  • Lost or stolen luggage: Busy airports and multiple transit stops make lost or stolen baggage a genuine risk. Your insurance covers your personal belongings up to the limits of your plan.
  • Assistance and liability: In the event of an incident involving a third party, some Yupwego policies include third-party liability cover. Check the terms of your plan before you travel.

What your Yupwego UAE travel insurance covers

For a trip to Dubai, Yupwego recommends a minimum of 500 000 € in cover, in line with the cost of private medical care on the ground.

  • Medical expenses and hospitalisation: Yupwego pays the hospital or clinic directly, so you never pay out of pocket, even for emergency surgery or an intensive care stay.
  • Medical repatriation: If your condition requires it, your medicalised return to France is fully organised and covered at no additional cost to you.
  • Cancellation and curtailment: Flights, prepaid accommodation, excursions: if you need to cancel or cut your trip short, Yupwego reimburses you for the reasons covered under your policy.
  • Baggage and personal belongings: Theft, loss or damage to your belongings during the trip: your property is covered up to the limit of your chosen plan.
  • 24/7 teleconsultation: A French-speaking doctor available around the clock from Dubai for initial medical advice, even before you locate a clinic.

Health and medical care in Dubai

Dubai’s private healthcare network is modern and well equipped, with skilled doctors and pharmacies readily available throughout the city. Tourists do not have access to the subsidised public health system: every consultation is billed directly, with no reimbursement from the French social security system. The main health risks are intense summer heat (high risk of heatstroke and dehydration) and stomach upsets; tap water is not recommended for drinking. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported a rise in measles cases in the UAE in early 2026: make sure your vaccinations are up to date before you leave. No vaccines are required to enter the UAE.

Entry requirements for Dubai

French nationals do not need a visa for Dubai: an entry stamp issued on arrival at the airport allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry and must include your full date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format: since December 2023, any passport that does not meet this requirement is refused at the border. Emergency passports (valid for 1 year) are not recognised in the UAE. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs classifies the UAE under heightened vigilance: check France Diplomatie for the latest recommendations before you travel. For longer stays or expatriation, a long-stay travel insurance or an expat insurance policy provides medical cover suited to the length of your stay.

Car hire and road safety in Dubai

Renting a car is a common way to get around the emirate. Always take out collision damage waiver (CDW) cover with your rental company: Yupwego travel insurance does not cover physical damage to a hired vehicle. That said, if you are injured in an accident, your own medical expenses and repatriation (personal injury) are covered by your travel insurance. Third-party liability cover depends on the terms of your policy: check this before you get behind the wheel.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance required for Dubai?

No, travel insurance is not required to enter the United Arab Emirates. It is, however, strongly recommended: there is no social security agreement between France and the UAE, and without cover you will be responsible for all medical costs out of pocket.

How much does a medical consultation cost in Dubai?

A private clinic consultation costs between approximately 46 and 110 euros for a GP, and up to 238 euros for a specialist. Hospital stays are considerably more expensive. Without insurance, you must pay upfront before receiving treatment.

Is my bank card enough for Dubai?

Premium cards (Visa Premier, Mastercard Gold) include basic assistance cover, but this is often limited in amount and duration. Given Dubai's high medical costs and the absence of French social security reimbursement, they rarely cover a serious hospitalisation.

What level of cover should I choose for Dubai?

Yupwego recommends a minimum of 500 000 € in medical expenses and repatriation cover. If you plan to hire a car, make sure you take out CDW damage cover with the rental company: Yupwego travel insurance does not cover physical damage to the vehicle.

Do French nationals need a visa for Dubai?

No. French nationals benefit from a visa exemption: an entry stamp on arrival allows a stay of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months and must include your full date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format.

Does travel insurance cover car hire in Dubai?

Partially. Medical expenses and repatriation in the event of a personal injury accident are covered by your travel insurance. Physical damage to the hired vehicle is not covered: take out CDW cover directly with the rental company.
