Travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter Serbia, but the public healthcare system is frequently overcrowded and providers typically require payment upfront. Medical repatriation to France can quickly run into tens of thousands of euros, a cost neither the French national health insurance nor the embassy will cover. Yupwego helps you find the right cover before you travel.

Travel insurance is not required at the Serbian border for French nationals. The public healthcare system is often overstretched and private clinics require upfront payment. Travelling without cover means risking significant out-of-pocket expenses with no guarantee of reimbursement.
Why Take Out Travel Insurance for Serbia?
- Upfront payment required on the spot: Serbian hospitals and clinics typically ask for payment on arrival. With Yupwego insurance, the bill is settled directly with the provider so you pay nothing out of pocket.
- Repatriation costs fall on you without insurance: In a serious emergency, medical repatriation to France can cost thousands of euros. The French embassy does not cover these costs; your insurance does.
- Uneven healthcare outside major cities: Beyond Belgrade and Novi Sad, access to quality care becomes more difficult. A transfer to a better-equipped facility may be necessary, and it comes at a price.
- Health risks in rural areas: Tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease and West Nile fever are present in rural and forested areas. An unexpected consultation or course of treatment can arise at any time.
- Cancellation and unforeseen events: An accident, illness or family emergency may force you to cancel or cut a trip short. Without cancellation cover, any costs already paid remain entirely your responsibility.
What Your Yupwego Serbia Travel Insurance Covers
For a trip to Serbia, Yupwego recommends a minimum of 500 000 € in cover to handle medical expenses and medical repatriation.
- Medical expenses and hospitalisation: Yupwego settles the bill directly with the healthcare provider so you pay nothing on the spot.
- Medical repatriation: In a serious emergency, the organisation and costs of your medical transfer back to France are covered.
- Cancellation and trip interruption: Your non-recoverable travel costs are reimbursed if an unforeseen event prevents you from travelling or forces you to return earlier than planned.
- Third-party liability abroad: If you cause bodily injury or property damage to a third party, the policy covers the costs up to the stated limits.
- 24/7 assistance and teleconsultation: A doctor or advisor available around the clock to guide you through any medical situation in Serbia, wherever you are.
Health and Healthcare in Serbia
Serbia has a social security agreement with France (form SE 21-05) that grants access to certain urgent care services within the Serbian public health network, but this network is often overstretched and reimbursement remains partial. Private clinics offer faster care but require upfront payment. The main health risks are tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease (rural and forested areas, spring and summer), West Nile fever and rabies. No vaccines are required, but health authorities recommend keeping routine vaccinations up to date and considering hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tick-borne encephalitis and rabies depending on the nature of your stay. Without insurance, any medical costs at a private clinic remain entirely your responsibility.
Entry Requirements for Serbia
French nationals can enter Serbia with a national identity card or a valid passport for the full duration of their stay, with no visa required for stays of up to 90 days. Note that Serbian authorities do not recognise the 5-year extension granted to older French national identity cards, nor any document previously reported as lost or stolen. If staying with a private host, registration with the local police is required within 24 hours (hotels handle this automatically). For stays longer than 90 days, see our long-stay travel insurance or our expat insurance.
Car Hire and Road Accidents in Serbia
Hiring a car in Serbia is common: an international driving licence is recommended alongside your French driving licence, and some rental companies require it. Always take out the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW): Yupwego travel insurance does not cover physical damage to a hired vehicle. That said, if you are injured in an accident, your own medical costs, hospitalisation and repatriation (bodily harm) are covered by your policy. Third-party liability is also covered under the terms of your Yupwego contract.
