It’s not always easy to travel alone. Sometimes talking, meeting people can also be a fun experience, so here are a few tips that might help.

Of course, if you’re looking to meet new people while traveling and you’re in H24 connection mode, there are a whole host of apps you’ve probably already heard of, but which we won’t praise today.

Here we’re going to talk about in real life dating! Because, honestly, do you really want to risk a date deep in Bangkok, with someone whose photos you’ve just seen on a (possibly) bogus profile?

Personally, no thanks!

What’s more, the advice you’ll find in this article is just as valid for the solo traveler dreaming of meeting his soulmate, as it is for globetrotters eager to make friends with the local population.

Here are a few tips to help you meet new people (and more, if you’re so inclined!) when you’re traveling to the ends of the earth.

Learn a few words in the language of the country you are visiting

Saying “hello”, “thank you”, or even a few words when ordering a meal in a restaurant always makes a good impression. (Well, I admit, you might end up with a strange dish, but that’s part of being adventurous, isn’t it?)

Familiarize yourself with local customs and habits

Did you know, for example, that in Japan it’s impolite to blow your nose in public? This means that if you come across a beautiful Azumaotoko or Kyoonna in the middle of a Shibuya crossroads in winter, and your nose is dripping, it’s better to sniff loudly than to take out your handkerchief… You’ve been warned!

Keep smiling and positive

When we send out positive energies, they usually have a boomerang effect. It makes the people around us feel good and encourages them to come to us.

Couchsurfing or staying with local people

We mentioned this in our article on how to cut costs when globetrotting. Once again, couchsurfing seems an ideal and positive solution in many respects!

Connect to the Travello application

Yes, yes, I know, in the introduction, we talked about some applications to (maybe) avoid… This one is in a completely different style. Travello lets you discover travelers in your area, post your travel photos, chat with other globetrotters, join groups based on your interests, and even host Meetups (more on that later).

Find activities via Meetup

This platform offers a wide range of activities, classified by theme, interest or group. Meetups Yoga, museums, hiking, board games… There’s something for everyone!

Join a local activity or go to a typical event

Visit the tourist office to find out more about the activities on offer. Festivals, parades, typical bars… If you want to get to know the locals, avoid the hyper-touristy places and set off to discover local traditions.

Going to a coworking space

And why not?

A few e-mails to send for work?

Do you have an article to write? Find a coworking space and get to know other hipsters.

Keep to a tight schedule

It may be a good idea to adapt your program according to any encounters you may have or how you feel about the place where you’ll be. It would be a shame to have to leave New York on the eve of July 4th!

Or, on the contrary… Take part in an organized trip

Obviously, there are pros and cons. Organized tours don’t usually allow for freedom of schedule or planning. But for some destinations, this type of travel allows you to let yourself be guided and enjoy the country. And… you’ll be obliged to engage in conversation with the other participants if you don’t want to be seen as the hermit on duty!

Pushing back your limits

Dare to do things you wouldn’t normally do. Go to a restaurant specializing in insects and compete with your tablemates to see who can eat the most horrible dish! And just imagine, if you do it on the island of Koh Lanta, the experience will be all the more unique! (Well, okay, except that you won’t gain any “comfort” if you eat unspeakable things…).

Or climb to the top of the Harbor Bridge when you were afraid of heights! (And don’t forget to hold on to the guide, especially if he/she is hot…

After all, it’s the vacations, so go wild!
